What is Uru?

There is a river called Uru, and a stout bird in South America called Uru. In ancient tongues, it signifies a great expanse—the earth, the ocean, or the limitless sky.

For over 2,000 years, the Uru, a hand-crafted wooden sailing vessel born along the southern coast of present-day India in Beypore, Kerala, navigated the maritime silk route, carrying spices, textiles, and people across the Arab World, Southeast Asia, and the shores of Africa. They moved through a world of fluid horizons—long before borders were drawn like lines in the sand by departing empires.

Uru also means home. It is the place of origin; the settlement where roots are finally struck. We come from cultures that believe it takes a village to raise a child.

Our stories are not individual; they are a tapestry.

Where are we from? Join us as we write, illustrate and weave the pieces together.

We love our illustration of the uru, golden sun and ocean against the red backdrop inspired by batik designs and warli painting.
